For the 2027–2028 Ocean Globe Race, Panacea will compete in the Sayula class.

She has undergone significant refits in 2008, 2013–2016, and most recently in 2023, and she is currently active in charter operations, including Atlantic crossings and Caribbean cruising, all undertake command of Tuomo Meretniemi.

Crew

Tuomo Meretniemi is a Finnish sailor and proud owner of Panacea, a 1981 S&S Nautor’s Swan 57 (#39), which he has owned since 2012. Over the past decade, Tuomo and his family have sailed around the world, living aboard Panacea from 2016 to 2024 and gaining invaluable long-distance offshore experience.

Hilla Paananen joins Tuomo as first mate, bringing valuable circumnavigation experience to the team after sailing aboard Swan 651 Spirit of Helsinki in the 2023 Ocean Globe Race.

Why do you want to compete in the Ocean Globe Race?

I have already fulfilled my own big dream of sailing around the world with my family. Now I feel that I want to enable great adventures and racing experience for the future off-shore sailors in Finland. Most of my young crew have sailing background in Sea Scouts. We also wish publicity for our science program that we are executing during the OGR. This program is designed together with three major universities in Finland.

What do you consider to be the best and worst part about the 2023 OGR?

I don’t know if there are best or worst parts in this kind of race. There are just millions of big and small things that are either very challenging or extremely rewarding. I believe the most exhilarating experience will be the sailing in the Southern Seas. The most challenging (and rewarding) part is to be able to lead the team for these nearly three years and still come out as friends.
